Haute Route of the Troll's - 6 day High level traverse

This epic high level route is the brain child of Jökull Bergmann. For many years Jökull had a dream of connecting all the great ski slopes of the Troll Peninsula into one big traverse where you would ski the entire length of the Peninsula from North to South, starting in the picturesque fishing village of Siglufjörður and ending in the capital of Northern Iceland Akureyri. Unlike the Alps the Troll Peninsula is lacking a network of comfortable mountain huts but we make this Haute Route possible by using 4x4 vehicles that put us in place and retrieve us each day allowing us to base out of our Country Lodge for the entire week. Join us and be amongst the first to accomplish the Haute Route of the Troll's

 Duration : 7 days
 Price : € 1.490.- per person

We will base out of a comfortable family run country lodge, in the middle of the best ski terrain that the Troll Peninsula has to offer. The site of the lodge has been continually inhabited by Icelandic sheep farmers since the colonization of the country in the late eighth century, and the current owners can trace their lineage back to the time of the first viking settlers. The terrain offers a great variety of mountains and slopes for every level of skier, from those who seek steep couloirs to those who like to let her loose on the big open slopes. The choice is endless and one could easily spend a lifetime exploring the peaks and valleys of the region. After each day of skiing we soak our weary but happy feet in one of the regions many geothermal baths and catch up on the local gossip as farmers and fishermen alike religiously attend their afternoon soak.

A typical day-to-day program for a week long trip

Day 1
Pick up in Akureyri the capital of northern Iceland in the late afternoon followed by a 45 min transfer to Klængshóll Lodge for a meet and greet. Welcome dinner is served and we go over the week's agenda.

Day 2
Our first day of skiing. We transfer directly to the northern most part of the Troll Peninsula to the lovely fishing village of Siglufjörður. The morning is spent on detailed avalanche transceiver and avalanche rescue training before we start our traverse towards Hedinsfjord and eventually over towards another small town called Olafsfjord where our transport awaits us. We finish off the day in the geothermal pools in Dalvik before heading home for a big feast and well deserved rest.

Day 3
The 30min drive to Olafsfjord in the morning is as scenic as they get with spectacular ocean views. Our goal today is to traverse over to Svarfaðardalur valley or the town of Dalvik depending on conditions. The scenery on this day is incredible as we ski right towards the wide open Arctic ocean.

Day 4
This day is with out doubt the most technical one with over 1500m of climbing and some steep slopes to negotiate but it is also one of the most spectacular as we tour over the highest peaks of the Troll Peninsula ending on the door step of Klaengsholl lodge.

Day 5
We put our skis on right outside the lodge and start our longest single climb of the traverse up towards the peak of Dyjafjallshnjukur from where we descent south towards the broad valley of Hörgárdalur where dozens of pretty farms dot the landscape. After a soak in the local geothermal baths we transfer back to Klaaengsholl lodge.

Day 6
Our last day of the Haute Route takes us to the town of Akureyri after traversing the great expanse of Vindheimajökull Glacier or Home of the Winds glacier as it would translate to in Icelandic. The trip ends in Akureyri where you can either relax for the night and enjoy the town or catch a flight back to Reykjavik. After another great day we say our good byes and head home with the memory of a unique ski touring holiday and already have our plans for future adventures falling into place. Thank you for your visit.

Day 7
Extra day or weather day. In the early season on the Troll Peninsula, bad weather can happen and therefore we have allotted a spare day for weather to maximize our chances of finishing the traverse.
If the weather cooperates for the duration of the tour, we will be rewarded by an extra day of great ski mountaineering in the vicinity of the Lodge.
