Getting to "Niceland"

The first step with any of our Iceland programs is getting to our little island. Fortunately Iceland is an easy destination to reach. Below you will find information on getting to Iceland and then how to reach the starting point for our Iceland programs. The start of our Iceland programs are easy to access by air or road.   For all programs outside of Iceland travel logistics will be provided separately.

There are over a 100 direct flights from Western Europe, the USA and Canada to Iceland every day operated by different airlines. It takes about 2-3 hours to fly from Europe, approximately 5 hours from the East Coast of North America and only 7 hours from the West Coast of North America. There is one main carrier, Icelandair, which services destinations on both sides of the Atlantic. All flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport, 45 minutes from Reykjavik, Iceland's capital.

To a list of airlines that service Keflavik International airport please visit the following page:

Once you arrive to Keflavík you can take a domestic flight to the start of your program in Iceland or use ground transportation.  Please see below for further details.

  • Reykjavik to the The Troll Peninsula: approximately 5.5 hours by car or 35 minutes via domestic flight.
  • Reykjavik to Eglistaðir: approximately 7 hours by car or 45 minutes via domestic flight.
  • Reykjavik to Isafjörður: approximately 6 hours by car or 45 minutes via domestic flight.

Please look at each individual program for further information about meeting times and locations.

Transfer (approximately 45 minutes) from the Keflavik International Airport (KEF) to the Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV) to take a short flight (35-45) minutes to Akureyri (AEY), Egilstaðir (EGS) or Isafjörður (ISF).  Please note that the domestic airline servicing Iceland is IcelandAir.

Please keep in mind that a minimum of 2.5 hours is required from the time your international flight lands in Keflavik until the departure of the domestic flight in Reykjavik. Passengers can experience delays with customs and baggage collection and the transfer time between airports is 45 minutes. There can also be heavy traffic between the airport and Reykjavik in the mornings during weekdays.  It is necessary to arrive at the Reykjavik domestic airport at least 30 minutes prior to departure. The domestic airport is very small and easy to navigate.

Some guests prefer to do some sightseeing before or after their program so there is an option to rent a car and drive from Reykjavík to the starting point of the program where you can return the car so that you are not paying for unused days. There are a number of car rental operations at the Keflavík airport and in Reykjavík. Please keep in mind that there is a typically a surcharge for one way rentals. The links below show which car rental services are available at each location.
